Brake calipers are a part of the disc brakes in an Audi vehicle. They're clamps with one or more pistons, and they have brake pads installed on them. Most cars and SUVs will at least have calipers up front, if not both front and rear.

What they do is fasten to your brake rotors. Step on the brakes, and you'll see how. First, your master cylinder will send brake fluid through hoses and valves, pressurizing the pistons. Second, that fluid will charge the calipers themselves. As a result, they clamp down, using the pads to generate friction -- resistance that slows and stops the vehicle.

The process produces a lot of heat, though. If the rotors can't scatter it properly, it can affect the calipers for the worse. For instance, heat can cause seal decay, allowing corrosive contaminants to accumulate. Other issues follow. Luckily, there are signs to tell you that you might have bad calipers. Look for:

• Abnormal brake pressure
• Brake fluid leaking into your engine compartment and onto your wheels
• Sideways drift as you brake
• Continuous grinding or squealing
• Warning lights on the dashboard -- specifically, for your brakes or ABS system
